[pa'ɲɔl], Marcel, französischer Schriftsteller, * Aubagne 28. 2. 1895, ✝ Paris 18. 4. 1974; wandte sich früh dem Theater und dem Film zu. Seine bühnenwirksamen Lustspiele sind humorvoll-satirische Sittenschilderungen, besonders aus der Welt der Kleinbürger (u. a. »Le grand ABC«, 1928; deutsch »Das große ABC«) und aus dem Marseiller Hafenmilieu (Marius-Trilogie: »Marius«, 1931, deutsch auch unter dem Titel »Zum goldenen Anker«; »Fanny«, 1932, deutsch; »César«, 1937, deutsch). Pagnol gründete zwei Filmgesellschaften und inszenierte zahlreiche Filme (u. a. 1936 »César«; 1938 »La femme du boulanger«, als Theaterstück 1946, deutsch »Die Frau des Bäckers«, auch unter dem Titel »Madame Aurélie«; 1938 »Le Schpountz«). Sein poetischer Realismus wurde mitbestimmend für das französische Filmschaffen der 1930er-Jahre. Die Prosa (Autobiographisches, Romane) zeichnet ein liebevolles, atmosphärisch dichtes Bild seiner südfranzösischen Heimat.
